5/4/09: The HuffPost-alJazeera Alliance: Fomenting (And Approving) Anti-U.S. Military, Anti-Christian Propaganda, Rage And Slanders

SUMMARY:

This is another instance in which HuffPost posted a misleading splash front-page headline --- sourced from notoriously jihadist-friendly and -whitewashing al-Jazeera. The headline insinuated that the U.S. military was giving Christian bibles to our soldiers, who were then ordered to proselytize to Afghanistanis.

As in so many other instances like this, many of the raging leftists that HuffPost attracts didn't bother to read the article or follow the links, but went on to post incredibly hateful "comments" against Christianity, the U.S. military, and America. HuffPost reviewed*, approved* and published these comments (*proof here, here), even though many were egregious violations of its (supposed) Comment Policy and Terms of Service.

Also, see important Addendum items, which document (1) how HuffPost published a related blog soon after this article appeared, which incited further hatred and misconceptions (along with one comment by an officer in the U.S. Navy); and (2) A very special venue in which Ms. Huffington appeared this week, to discuss... "the future of journalism."

To know HuffPost is to know that almost invariably, whenever the U.S. military is featured in a top-of-the-front-page splash headline, or anywhere near that level of prominence, it is in one of three capacities:

• When one or more of its members are accused of committing atrocities or mistakes
  (And, as in the case of HuffPost's coverage of the Israeli Defense Forces, when these accusations are later found to be false or largely fabricated, or manufactured by groups notorious for this kind of nefarious activity, they are either not covered at HuffPost, or are buried far away from the main sections.)
  
  
• When one or more of its members are victims of bloodshed, or some other tragedy
  
  
• When they are used as political propaganda

In three years of observation, HuffBusters doesn't recall more than one instance* in which the heroism of American soldiers was depicted in a prominent story, or any soldier was shown receiving an award for going above and beyond the call of duty.

(*The exception being the sporadic references to Marcus Luttrell, author of Lone Survivor --- but as you can see by following these links, none were top-line news stories, and only a few garnered even a handful of user comments. This is indicative of how far away from the primary sections these items were placed; even off-beat gossip and news articles often get hundreds of comments.)


But now, it's come to this: On May 4, 2009, HuffPost built one of its front-page splash headline stories around a "news" feature that was developed by al-Jazeera...

...the jihadist-friendly "news" network that threw a party for the terrorist who murdered a 4-year-old girl's father in front of her --- then crushed her skull with the butt of his rifle.

(Note: Perhaps this shouldn't come as that much of a surprise, being that al-Jazeera became a top-line (above-the-HP-logo) advertiser at HuffPost in late 2008)

Unfortunately, HuffBusters wasn't able to obtain a screen capture of HuffPost's front page on May 4, 2009 --- but we saw it. It was a splash headline (example below of a "splash") that insinuated the U.S. military gave bibles to our Afghanistan-based soldiers, and ordered them to proselytize for Christianity. The accompanying photograph was a still from the al-Jazeera video footage, which it had run the previous evening on its network.


Aside from the fact that HuffPost apparently has no problem relying on terrorist-celebrating "news" networks for its source material, there are a just a few little problems with the perception that this inflammatory headline isinuates (some of which were included in the article, others that developed over the next few days):

• No bibles were distributed to Afghans --- and none of our soldiers proselytized in Afghanistan
  
  
• The bibles in question were sent by a single U.S. church to a single soldier in Afghanistan --- they were not provided by the U.S. military
  
  
• The U.S. military intervened before any proselytizing could happen; proselytizing is strictly against our military policy, which was enforced to the letter
  
  
• The story created new, incendiary misperceptions as to what our military is actually doing in Afghanistan, while downplaying or ignoring how vigilant it actually is to not offend local sensitivities (leaving alone the fact that the Taliban, rooted in and supported by many Afghans actually forces others to convert to Islam)
  
  
• The story is more than a year old (acknowledged deep in the article --- which many of HuffPost's raging leftists obviously did not read --- a pattern that HuffPost is, or should be well aware of, by now)

[UPDATE: All of the above was confirmed in a follow-up article several days later at... al-Jazeera, and more; that some soldiers who intended to distribute bibles to Afghanistanis have been reprimanded. Thus far, HuffPost has not published this information.]

Given all the above, what was the pressing newsworthiness of this story that merited front-page, "above-the-fold," inflammatory treatment? How does this conform to HuffPost's stated "journalistic" missions --- or journalistic standards of any kind? And what exactly did HuffPost expect would occur, given the legions of raging, hate-filled leftists that it has attracted and enabled?

So, what kinds of user "comments" did HuffPost review*, approve* and publish (*proof here, here) --- many of which were grossly in violation of its Comment Policies and Terms of Service?

HuffPost has, however, continued its practice of removing the comments from and/or fast-banning dissenting users, whom its most raging leftists complain about and/or threaten to have banned (proof available upon request).

My experience with military people? On average, I find them to be untrustworthy and not too bright. But primarily, they seem so willing to lie. I don't understand that, except that perhaps this is the way military people avoid unpleasant facts? Truths? I've employed long-time military people and have employed Army brats, etc. I'm always disappointed --especially in the lies. Can anyone come up with a reason why this seems to be a common trait?

How DARE these people attempt to convert people in Afghanistan!?!? This is against the law of the nation in which we are an occupying force. It has NOTHING to do with American ideals, with what the USA believes, it only represents the beliefs of a small number of zealots in the USA. It also makes the war in the Middle East appear as a CRUSADE. For the last few weeks reich-wingers have been saying that to show photos of Americans torturing our prisoners would produce violence against us, well what do they think will happen when these very same fundamentalist Muslims catch wind that Americans are actively trying to convert the faithful Muslims into Christians??? We will see more violence against the USA as a result of these ILLEGAL conversions than what will be produced by a few photos. After all, the Muslims who are most against us, are such strong fundamentalist Muslims, they aren't concerned about a few people being hurt by torture. Remember, these people happily die for their religion, they won't stand for these activities, they should be stopped TODAY!!

Behold: The above is the direct result of HuffPost's blazing, misleading headlines, which could have been fashioned by al-Jazeera. Predictably, when exposed to raging leftists who clearly don't read the article, this is the kind of ill-informed hatred and venom that is unleashed, by a website that reviews, approves and publishes* it all (*here, here).

Close HuffPost observers also know that on those instances when a user launches into a screed such as the above re Muslims, or the Koran, the raging leftists (a) go apoplectic, (b) claim the user is a "racist," and (c) threaten to have him/her banned --- which HuffPost almost invariably does, often within minutes.

Yet when the raging leftists that HuffPost attracts, facilitates and protects launch into hateful screeds and slanders like these against Christianity, the bible, and our military (and some, even wishing for the death/murder of those featured in this al-Jazeera report)... well... it's business as usual.

The screen captures below prove that as of May 9, HuffPost had still not banned the users who were responsible for the most hateful, policy-violating comments it reviewed, approved and published (see "Top Ten," above):

As noted earlier, keep in mind that HuffPost permitted these users to continue spewing their hateful comments, while it fast-bans non-violating (non-leftist) users about whom they complain, often within minutes (proof available upon request).

The opening sentences of HuffPost's advertising solicitation link read:

"Reach over 20 Million thought-leaders! The Huffington Post attracts a large, affluent, educated audience of opinion leaders."

At this point, some questions that must be asked are:

• Exactly what, in HuffPost's opinion, constitutes a "thought leader"?
  
  
• And how does it define "opinion leaders"?

Because if this is a sampling of the audience of "thought-opinion leaders" that HuffPost "attracts," and to whom it throws misleading red meat such as this, and from which it approves and publishes such hateful, ill-informed comments against America and our military, in our opinion, it is worth wondering:

Are HuffPost's advertisers aware of all this? Do they really understand who they're paying to reach --- and of the way that HuffPost foments, approves, publishes and even protects this kind of hate-speech?

ADDENDUM 1: TWO HOURS LATER, HUFFPOST PUBLISHED A FOLLOW-ON BLOG ARTICLE THAT ADDED FUEL TO THE FIRE OF THE MISCONCEPTIONS THAT IT HAD CLEARLY FOMENTED

The original HuffPost-alJazeera article was published at 2:24pm. (Note: It is unclear why comments from this thread, listed above started at 12:06pm; see JPG, below). At 4:47pm, HuffPost published a blog article by Kamran Pasha, a self-described Hollywood filmmaker, which was entitled:

Bible and Guns: Why Soldiers Who Proselytize Strengthen Our Enemies

(Note: Similarly, it is unclear why, on Pasha's blogthread, which was posted at 4:47pm, the comments, shown below, start at 4:02pm; see JPG. Could HuffPost be manipulating timestamps?)

You need only consider one paragraph in this blog to get a gist of how far HuffPost was willing to go to add fuel to the fire that it had set, barely two hours earlier:

But faith proffered at the end of a gun is not the same as spirited discourse between equals. American soldiers are in a position of power - lethal power - over the men, women and children in whose countries they are acting. When an armed man seeks to share his beliefs with you, it is not about spreading enlightenment, but about domination and control. To go into other countries with a rifle in one hand and a Bible in the other, can only create fear, resentment and backlash.

If you need to, go back and re-read the original story, then compare it to the headline that HuffPost employed (and, if you trust HuffBusters, consider the splash headline it employed, which was even more incendiary). None of the above occurred. It was stopped before it could start, because it was an egregious violation of U.S. military policy.

What good did HuffPost think could possibly come from its screaming headline --- and the hateful comments that it reviewed, approved and published? You'd have to ask HuffPost about that. Perhaps someone in the U.S. news media --- or one of HuffPost's advertisers --- will do so, one day.

I hardly think that this is as wide spread as this article would imply. I would not say that this has not occurred, but not as impactful as this article would say. This is just another way of driving a wedge between the American people and its soldiers. I can easily say this, because I am not a Christian, but I still do have critical thinking skills that some publications lack.

The fact that it is happening at all, in direct violation of General Order 1 is the point. Even if only one soldier attempted to convert a Muslim to Christian during war time, it would be a dishonorable discharge violation

It should be punishable by brig time! They are there as soldiers. Not as missionaries. Anyone from a "christian" country who carries a gun is instantly viewed with, at best, suspicion in that part of the world. And with good reason. Please note the quotes around Christian. Regardless of if we are or not (we're not supposed to be) perception is 9/10th of reality.

I just find it heartbreaking that those who are being sent to fight what is now obviously become a Holy War have no real concept of what they are fighting for. In the Christian faith too, people are told they must come to find Jesus/God on their own, not that Jesus or God will come to them. OF course, as usual, those who fight in the name of Christianity know not what they speak

Ironically, and refreshingly, HuffPost also published one comment from a user who claims to be an officer in the U.S. Navy, which provided some much-needed levity and perspective on the erroneous perceptions that it incited in the raging leftists that it attracts:

I think that many people are jumping to conclusions here. Our military has members from all faiths, and in some cases, I'm sure that there are those who would like to proselytize their faith. However, the mlitary strictly forbids this and it is not tolerated at any level. The military is a microcosm of our entire society, and sometimes there are those that do not uphold our values. But it's unfair to generalize and make assumptions about something that is just not true.

The soldier in Afghanistan that caused this frenzy was counseled by the chaplain for attempting to violate military policy. The bibles were confiscated and never distributed. Additionally, the bibles were donated by a church in the U.S. and were completely unsolicited.

I am a proud member of the U.S. military and those I serve with are true heroes.
Please make sure that you have all the facts before making accusations and assumptions.

The purpose of both threads is to help expose:

The question of why HuffPost is so biased in its "reporting" and the news stories it features, and why it routinely approves comments containing vicious blood libels and propaganda against Israel and Jews*, is a question that only its management can answer. Will any media figure pose this question to them? Who knows --- time will tell.

The Positive Stories Re Israel That Are NOT Covered At HuffPost

Even the casual HuffPost observer is well aware that practically as soon as a negative story concerning Israel breaks (or can be spun that way), it gets prominent placement on the front page.

Almost invariably, such stories are matched with pictures that advance what HuffPost blogger and noted legal scholar Alan Dershowitz described as the site's "hard-left bias" on Israeli affairs. Israelis are visually depicted on HuffPost almost invariably in militaristic, hard-line terms --- while Palestinians, Lebanese, etc., are portrayed (often in staged photos) as ever-innocent victims, and the terrorists that many/most support as courageous "freedom fighters."

Together, as is documented at HB, these stories and pictures form the "red meat" that incites vicious anti-Israel perceptions, lies, propaganda and blood libels contained in user comments (some of which are tinged with fiery anti-Semitism).

But what happens when something hopeful or positive emerges from Israel?

A story that challenges the constant Israel-bashing, Islamist-sympathizing biases among the hard left, as expressed on HuffPost --- which bills itself as "The Internet Newspaper"?

They don't appear anywhere on the main page, if on the site at all.

This thread will contain a regularly-updated listing of these items that were in other prominent news media, which HuffPost could have accessed, just as it aggregates its content from sources throughout the world... but apparently chose not to.

Keep this in mind the next time a flare-up occurs between Israel and its neighbors, and the kinds of sentiments that you see expressed by America's hard-left, which HuffPost now caters to, and helps to keep motivated.

Basically, in this historical chronology of his statements, Lieberman urges a hard line against Palestinian terrorists, and an approach to fighting them that will minimize the loss of Israeli lives.

Shocker there, being that Israel's endless negotiations, surrenders of land, aid, etc. have all worked so well to stop militant Islamist terror against its civilians and soldiers. The outcome of Israel's recent election was a direct result of the unmitigated string of failures to negotiate a real "peace" with those who, by their own admission, are sworn to its destruction.

What HuffPost defines as "outlandish" is debatable. What is not debatable, however, is the fact that HuffPost has not covered (let alone trumpeted, as in this case) the "outlandish" historical statements from the "official" political and religious voices on the other sides of Israel's borders --- in Gaza and the West Bank --- as articulated by their sources, or their progenitors.

Hamas's and the Palestinian Authority's shared "solution" to the Israel issue: The murder of Jews, and the theft of the Jewish state

Hamas's glorious words of peace, tolerance and understanding:

• "We will not rest until we destroy the Zionist entity" (January 2009)

Will HuffPost decide to do a corresponding chronology of the "outlandish" statements by those who are sworn to Israel's destruction, yet who are disguised (and promoted by certain websites) as activists who only seek "peace"? All the above was the result of about 15 minutes of simple research using the Google. Is that too much time for "The Internet Newspaper" to spend, to present a "fair and balanced" depiction of "outlandish" statements emanating from the Middle East?

Time will tell.

4/2/09: Ax Murder Of Israeli Child: Who Said It - A Terrorist Spokesman, Or HuffPosters (With Approval)?

4/2/09: Ax Murder Of Shlomo Nativ - A Grim Addendum


Today an Israeli child, Shlomo Nativ, 16, was murdered by an ax-wielding Islamist monster in the West Bank. A 7-year-old companion was also attacked by the same perpetrator, and is now clinging to life.

While not a top-line story at HuffPost, the thread received very prominent placement. As is shown on this addendum thread, when one clicked on the top news thread of the day, this story appeared directly above it in a headline with picture link.

The following screen captures, obtained at 3:05pm, verify that once again, contrary to HuffPost's claims (more here), it pre-moderates the comments on news threads, including this one. At this time, HuffPost had reviewed, approved and published 87 comments, while 48 were still pending its approval (or rejection).



Now comes the grim quiz:

It is sad that we even have to go through yet another exercise like this, especially as it relates to the story of the barbaric murder of a 16-year-old Israeli boy. Unfortunately, it is necessary --- to show what a sampling of the comments that HuffPost reviewed, approved and now "owns" actually consist of. The following comments have been abbreviated for brevity only, and spelling was corrected as needed.

Before reading the following comments, keep in mind that HuffPost's FAQ: Comments & Moderation and Comment Policy claim that the site prohibits comments that:

"...are abusive... contain slurs... include ad hominem attacks including comments that celebrate the death or illness of any person, public figure or otherwise..."

ONE of the following statements is from a terrorist spokesman.

The other NINE were posted by HuffPost users, approved by its management, and published on this thread: West Bank Ax Attack Kills Israeli Child, Poses Test For New PM, as of 3:05pm (PDFs available upon request).

Can you tell which is which?

(1) "There are no ''innocents', only targets...and acceptable/unacceptable levels of collateral damage. That is the reality...like it or not. For those of us still trying to operate from a moral perspective... I can understand (the attack), given the conditions for Palestinians."


(2) "Any story coming from Israeli sources cannot be given the benefit of the doubt for truth or accuracy... (W)ho knows whether any of this story is true or not? Do any rational, liberty-loving Americans (especially Jews) find it shocking that in the final analysis, the raging leftists that HuffPost facilitate and approve made even more incendiary, lie-filled, slanderously Israel-hating statements than a spokesman for Hamas did?

And are the world's biggest advertisers --- which are HuffPost's source of revenue --- really aware of what it is exactly that they are supporting, and what kind of "audience" they are paying to reach?

Who knows whether any of this story is true or not? Certainly no one should murder innocents, and there is no excuse for engage in it, regardless of whether the murderer is Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Israeli, Palestinian or whatever. That goes without saying. Certainly those Palestinian groups who encourage attacks on truly innocent people should be condemned. However, I do feel that the blame for this type of thing must also rest with those Israelis , especially the politicians, who have and continue to support this criminal settlement program, as well as the parents of this child and young adult. Had they not dragged their family into this clearly provocative enterprise of stripping the land away from its rightful owners, the measures taken by Israel in occupied Palestine would not exist and the predictable, if sometimes criminal, reactions of the native population to the crimes, injustices and oppression of occupation would not occur.

this was most likely not in the name of religion but in the name of you have invaded my land and you have killed members of my family therefore i will kill members of your family. The settlement in which this happened is actually an illegal settlement according to the UN because it is technically in palestinian territory.

This is a horrendous crime, but it's very telling that Israeli television is giving wall to wall coverage to the death of a single child while censoring images -- let alone names -- of hundreds of children killed in Operation Cast Lead alone. The Palestinians put up with attacks from Jewish settlers on a daily basis, which is something else censored from Israeli (and our) news. I'd be interested to know how many of the murderer's children have been killed by the actions of Israel. I'm guessing that will be an insight into the motives for his crime.

"Lust for murder in his eyes"? No wonder Israel can't make the right national security/foreign policy decisions. They continue to falsely characterize the actions of the Palestinians. I'm quite sure it wasn't lust, but probably acute frustration with Israel's brutal policies and America's biased support for those policies. I don't condone murder, but let's call this what it is--revenge, retaliation, an eye for an eye, etc. This wasn't lust, it was an brutal reaction to brutal policies.

Unfortunately as we witnessed in Gaza with over 400 children burned and dismembered in the invasion, children are the most innocent victims in this conflict. That being said. Bulldozing someone's home, stealing his land and burning his orchards constitute a crime against humanity and a highly provocative act of inhumanity. If Israel loves this land so much that it finds nothing immoral in stealing it, then it should remember King Solomon's judgment of splitting the baby to find out who loves him more, and would give him up rather than face utter tragedy. Israel's actions are proving that they don't care about the land, their children or their children's future and security. All that matters is this obsession, this lust for another"s land and a ridiculous quest to retrieve a privileged status that is dead and buried in the past. The Palestinians have been subjected to such oppression and hardship that it is not surprising to expect acts of blind rage. They have lost everything; their homes, their land, their livelihood and thousands of children over the years. When you treat a man like an animal he will respond with the rage of an animal. God bless the child. I wish his parents return the land.
